Future of GPS

Remember when cell phones were the size of suitcases and as rare as a four-leaf clover? What about when changing channels meant getting out of your sofa, walking over to the television across the room, and turning a knob until you found what you were looking for? Advances in technology quickly become things that we take for granted, and GPS Handheld Devices are no exception. What may seem like a novelty or a crazy gadget today, will be commonplace just a few years from now.

It is likely that the majority of people in the world will one day carry GPS technology in the palm of their hand, likely in an all-in-one type of gadget that also contains a cell phone, PDA, remote control, MP3 Player and who knows what else?! The ability to triangulate ones exact location in the world in a matter of a fraction of a second will eventually be taken for granted. There are some who have expressed "Big Brother" type concerns about the future of GPS in our World. What if the government could track your every movement whenever it wanted to? Some parents already use GPS personal tracking systems to monitor their children's movement. Of course this is done for reasons of safety, but does it set a dangerous precedent? Or does safeguarding against abduction mitigate any potential privacy concern? Certainly both sides of the argument can and will be argued in the years to come. One thing is certain, however, and that is that GPS technology is here, and here to stay.

Reliance on GPS and other satellite-based information is a potential threat because there are so many pieces of equipment, not to mention garbage, floating around in our orbit at all times. Collisions can occur, and the more stuff we send into orbit, the higher the risk that essential satellites could be destroyed. It's one thing if DirecTv loses a satellite, but it's quite another if a significant piece of equipment relaying vital information is destroyed when it's most needed.

While the US Government, the sole owner and operator of the GPS infrastructure, maintains the right and ability to disconnect GPS technology to civilian users at any time, there are probably already too many businesses and sectors that would be crushed without GPS. Technology moves at the speed of light, but once we catch up with a certain aspect of it, we take it for granted, and simply cannot live without it. GPS enables anyone who owns a device to do so many useful things, and the technology will continue to become a staple in our day-to-day lives. Remember all those people who said they would never have a need to carry a cell phone? Those are the same people who claim today that GPS is just a novelty or a gadget, and they will likely swallow their words yet again when they're using a GPS device on a daily basis.
